Hey undergrads, and stylish young people! I'll keep this one short and sweet, as we're all trying not to evaporate from this summer heat. Welcome to a new feature here at The Undergrad Style File, called Outfitting the Occasion. Where I will show you what to wear for specific occasions; including everything from interviews to internships. On this week's post, the Summer wedding. I performed an original poem at my uncle's wedding this past weekend and thought I would step up my ensemble a little since I had to speak at a podium. I opted for this fabulously retro dress, the neckline is reminiscent of the 1940's, all I needed were white gloves and a little hat. Very Rachel McAdams in The Notebook. But anyway I kept the rest of the look simple with white-enamel earrings and classic pearls. The wedges added a bit of height and the bow detail kept the look feminine.

 

When outfitting for a summer wedding think semi-formal, always check to see if the bride and groom have a dress code. If not then think about dressing in your Sunday best or just your best. A simple dress, or skirt and blouse with classic jewelry is always a good choice.

As per my birthday tradition, I like to plan several events leading up to my birthday. Since I'm turning 20 soon, I wanted to kick off the festivities by playing with a girlier style. I snatched up this vintage-feeling polka dot and chambray 2fer-dress at Charlotte Russe for twelve dollars. I added classically chic elements with a two-tone rose gold link watch. P.S. I'm watch obsessed now, it just feels classier than pulling out a phone to check the time. I kept the rest of the look simple with white thong sandals and cream-colored square frame sunglasses. The bow-detail satchel made me feel very NYC chic, bonus points for it being a cross-body bag. The final outfit was perfect for a summer-time cookout. Stay tuned for the next birthday outfit!

Keeping It Classy: Leggings As Pants

On this week's post I'm tackling the trend that plagues undergrads and young fashion-lovers alike.  The dreaded "leggings-as-pants" hysteria, we've all seen it, and probably don't want to admit that we've done it. Fine, I admit it! When you have 6 classes a week, a job, and a life, fashion tends to fall by the wayside in college. So you roll out from under your mattress, throw on a hoodie and your comfy cotton leggings, in black of course. Meanwhile, these leggings tend to leave little to the imagination. Leggings are meant to complement a longer shirt, tunic, or dress. If you wouldn't wear pantyhose with just a t-shirt, think about that when you reach for the trusty black leggings. Ready to class it up? Opt for a longer shirt, like the hi-low hem t-shirt featured above. Riding boots elongate the leg-line and add a chic element. A boyfriend cardigan adds extra back-coverage. Belt the cardigan to polish the look, add pearl studs and a turquoise bubble necklace for some punch. The final look is perfect for a "lazy day" of classes in the Fall.

Thrift Excursions: Buffalo Exchange

So I recently ventured into the thriftosphere, I have been on the hunt for thrifted gems all over Philly. Last week I decided to step on the other side of the resale counter and become a seller. I got tired of the bags of dresses and clumps of jewelry that I had rarely worn taking up space in my already packed-to-the-gills, miserably tiny closet. So what did I do? I packed up two dresses, two skirts, one pair of shorts and five pairs of shoes, along with two necklaces, one bracelet and a ring into a huge beach bag. I brought a friend with me and off I went to go negotiate. Here's how it works: At Buffalo Exchange , when you're trying to make cash from the wares you no longer wear, you just walk right up to the "sell" counter. A trained buyer will then have you lay out all of your items and inspect each piece. They then tell you what they would resell each piece for and give you 30% of the total. You have the option of taking cash upfront or receiving a store credit. For my bag of goods I walked away with fifty bucks, though I was offered a ninety-dollar store credit. The moral of the story, you can't be a stylish undergrad until you understand the value of thrifting and tap into the secret of selling things you no longer wear. The Sunday Feature: Mary Jane's Closet

So I'm starting a new post series here at The Undergrad Style File, called The Sunday Feature. Every Sunday I will featuring any and everything style-related that has struck my interest. Up this week is Mary Jane's Closet, it's co-founder Jasmine Anderson, who I went to middle-school with gave me some insight into the brand and its inspiration.

What kind of events have you done?:"Last year, we held our first fashion show, collaborating with Philly Frocks, entitled Flash Fashion. It was held right outside on Broad & Chestnut, with about 25+ models, 3 different scenes. We anticipate to have another one this year!
